Hi guys, can anyone tell me what are the basic programming tools you need to create a simple arcade game? For example if you want just a simple flash game. What programming language can you use? Any comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. :)

Now flash is not used anymore. For flash developers that was a really bad thing, that flash was killed by adobe without having something else to replace it.

Currently the de facto standard is HTML5; it's a good replacement for flash arcade games and it's supported by all the browsers, including the ones on mobiles.

If you are looking to develop simple games without writing code, you have 2-3 alternatives:
  • Construct2 - it's nice tool for writing code-less games, you would need to buy a license which costs around 150 usd, but you can try it for simple games for free(less than 100 instructions).  A Construct 2 licence used to be around 30 usd. They increased the price because they released recently Construct 3, which is an online development tool(no need to install anything); That have a recurring yearly price starting with 90 usd.
  • Game Maker - They have a basic free version which can not export to HTML5. To be able to export to HTML5 you need to buy the standard version which costs 99 plus an html5 exporter of about 149 usd
  • GDevelop - A free opensource game engine, similar to Construct 2. It might not be as feature rich as Construct 2, but if you don't want to spend money on license it might worth a try

Those are the game engines which you can use to create HTML5 games visually. I'm going to post in a future post the code-based games engines which can be used to develop html5 and another one with the game engines for developing mobile games.
